Camera review: Nikon 1 (S1 KIT + 11-27.5MM)

A camera for (fashion) events …small with quality

Small ….that was the first thing that went through my mind when seeing and holding this Nikon 1. Turn it around and you’ll be surprised by the large display on the back, yet it’s lightweight with changeable lenses.

I decided to do ‘review-posts’ about camera-gear (thanks to CAMEX), so I can help you guys decide what gear to buy ….and of course it’s my passion! This isn’t the standard (boring) review which discusses the technical specs, measurements etc. No! It’s the more practical approach and key features …just the way I experience it.

Perfect for bloggers

Why this camera? In my opinion this camera is perfect for snapshots when visiting events like; store openings and launch parties ….so perfect for bloggers! It has a small lightweight body and changeable lenses (3 zoom-types: wide-angle, standard-zoom and ultra-zoom) which fits perfectly in your daily bag (even a clutch!). It’s 10 Mp sensor creates sharp shots which is more than enough for online publishing (blogs etc.).

“Compact, easy to hold and photos with great quality! – Formula Farah (fashion blogger)”

I took this camera for a spin at F.A.L.L. Magazine Launch party in Amsterdam, a typical blogger event ….perfect for testing the Nikon 1 S1. People (photographers, designers and bloggers) were enthusiastic about the camera. They loved the design, the picture quality and especially the changeable lenses.

Likes:

  • quick response; no lag visible on display when moving camera (at daylight)
  • small body; fits in every bag and even the pockets in my pants
  • changeable lenses; the right lens for the job
  • full HD movies!
  • 15 shots per second (up to 60)
  • all lenses are zoom, very practical
  • large clear display

Dislikes:

  • no viewfinder, only that back display
  • lack of good grip of the body
  • no ‘real’ photo-mode wheel (digital only)
  • quite a lag when using the flash
  • visible noise at 3200 ISO
  • ISO not higher than 6400
