Travel: Sunrise at Park Avenue, New York

“Sunrise in Manhattan is something else …”

I usually experience sunrise as the world coming to life, light everywhere. But in Manhattan there’s a lot of shadow due to the skycrapers ….so every morning when I crossed Park Ave I was still surrounded by shadow while the top side of the street was fully light by the sun. Such a nice thing. For me as a photographer, I find New York with its light one challenging city to photograph. Harsh contrast of light and dark which could be different at any moment.

Favorite moments: My park bench, New York

Definitely one of my fav parks in New York, Washington Square Park. It’s just great sitting on those large benches and watching the people, the street artists having a good time. Of course the Arch totally completes it …such a beautiful one and also well known thanks to the awesome movie I Am Legend (luckily without the zombies :P).

To be honest the park is nice but misses some good surrounding stores and bars. So for me the next logical step was to hit the Fifth Avenue amd head towards the Empire.

Favorite moments: Best place I blogged

“Combine that with your fave coffee flavour and voila”

With 100% certainty I can say that blogging in New York, especially a Starbucks with a good view on the always busy streets, is the best place I blogged. Why? Well I think it has to do with the fact that I’m surrounded with life …and by life I mean the life I need: fashionistas, gents, architecture, signs, sounds, working people, stories, interesting and contrasting street moments. Combine that with your fave coffee flavour and voila …I got myself the place to work.

I found working here just perfect, starting the day with a nice breakfast and coffee while checking the latest and posting new stuff for you guys. While working I got energized by only looking outside; the people, the traffic …all great moments to capture. So every day I couldn’t wait to finish my daily posts and grab my beloved camera and hit the streets!

Of course back in The Netherlands I also got these moments and places, but it just not that great as I experienced in New York …so can’t wait to go back again.

Personal: The world famous skyline

new york skyline | THE-VIEWFINDER-5424-title

Of course you all immediately recognize New York City (Manhattan) by online seeing its skyline ..its contour …the skyscrapers. I’m talking about the most famous skyline out there. For a while, after 9/11, I thought that without those beautiful Twin Towers the skyline would never be as recognizable as before. Luckily the people of New York added a few skyscrapers, one in particular, that really gave back the city that unique skyline. The one that people nowadays immediately associate with New York City.

So one of my goals for my visit to New York in 2014 was to capture that beautiful restored skyline. However, I wanted to capture it from a unique angle to capture its beauty with another perspective. Luckily I was able to shoot from this rooftop in Brooklyn, thanks to my client Ink Global. I wanted to capture it with the beautiful Manhattan Bridge instead of the regular (awesome) Brooklyn Bridge. It was great seeing the skyline now with the finished Freedom Tower (last time I visited NY they were constructing the fifth floor) and its beautiful and respectful Memorial Pool.

PORTFOLIO NOW ONLINE

portfolio-THE-VIEWFINDER

Hey guys, I decided to add my portfolio to THE VIEWFINDER. Now you can easily get an overview of my work (outdoor & indoor shoots, look book, events etc) on the ‘ PORTFOLIO’ section and get more in depth info at my ‘COMMERCIAL’ section. Keep an eye on my portfolio to see my most recent work. For now it’s still incomplete so I’ll be adding more work in the upcoming days.

My shoot prep-routine

shoot preparing sketch-THE VIEWFINDER-5752

Location, model, theme …always enthusiastic when I got an upcoming shoot. For me the best way to prepare one is by illustrating my ideas, locations and inspiration I found in mags or online. That way I get a better visual that I can also present to the model/ client to be even more prepared before actually doing the shoot and sharing ideas results in a better result.

By illustrating I don’t mean the well detailed illustrations (maybe sometimes) …often I just doodle around during the meeting to immediately present my ideas. It’s only natural doing this because of my illustration background. Above you’ll see an example of a moodboard I made for my shoot : Laundry day.

For me it’s nice to be able to combine my other great passion ‘illustration’ with my photography. If you guys got any tips or things you like to do before a shoot share it below.

Added another year…

THE-VIEWFINDER-5573-2-years-anniversary

Another year of THE VIEWFINDER has passed and quite an interesting I might add. I had the pleasure of shooting my first wedding, met interesting people, new collaborations, nice shoots and studio photography, Unfortuntelly there were some moments of I was occupied with work and stuff that I couldn’t post that much.

Also very important was my second visit to New York, this time with my wife. It was great being there, shooting and enjoying live as if we’re being ny’ers. To end this second year we moved to this new house and so I got myself a new home studio where I can blog, edit and shoot.

Thank you guys for following and liking my work! I promise you guys to keep it up and you would help me a lot by sharing my website. ^_^
